The rounding of the edges of metal parts

In previous posts we asked the most frequently asked questions about deburring and grinding. In addition to grinding, the rounding of the edges of metal parts is becoming more and more common and in demand.

What exactly is edge rounding of metal pieces?

By rounding the edges of the metal pieces we give a radius to the sharp edges of the pieces.

Why edge rounding?

Correct and accurate edge rounding is becoming increasingly important in the metalworking industry for a number of reasons:

  • The product is more manageable and safer to work for. Operators or end users no longer hurt their hands on sharp edges, so they can work with more tranquility.
  • Sharp edges lead to poor adhesion of paint or coating, which can peel off the edge and cause corrosion.
  • Current standards require a specific pre-defined radius, so edge rounding is essential.

How to rounding edge?

There are different ways of rounding the edges of metal parts. Before special tools and machines were developed for this purpose, radials were used for deburring. This made edge rounding a slow, imprecise and non-uniform process.

Today, specific hand tools, including grinders, are available on the market. These tools guarantee faster and more consistent edge rounding than fully manual tools. However, the quality still depends on the person operating the tool. Moreover, this operation is labour-intensive and costly.

There are several machines that apply a constant radius to metal parts in a single pass. An example of these are the Q-Fin F600 and F1200 deburring machines.

Q-Fin specialises in the development, construction and sale of machines with maximum GrindingPOWER® that combine deburring, rounding and finishing. In this way, you not only get a product that does not damage your hands, but also a product that looks perfect and flawless.
